The Rule of Law, which is what the organization´s name is based on, is the idea, principle, process, etc., that every person is equal under the law. This ensures no one in government is above the law. In our present society, the highest law is considered the Constitution, meaning every individual must follow it. This concept is considered to be one of the founding values of our Republic. 

 

The roots of the Rule of Law come from Athens of Ancient Greece, Magna Carta, and the Enlightenment Era. Ancient Greece developed democracy and provided philosophical foundations, although at the time, it still had its limitations. The Magna Carta put a stop to the absolute monarchy of King John in 1215 and made the idea of the king also being subject to the law. The Enlightenment Era advocated for the separation of powers and for how government should uphold an individual´s natural rights.

The Rule of Law contains very important principles. Here is the breakdown of the well-known ones: 

1. Legality- The government may not place a law that restricts movement just because it feels like it. It must have a severe reasoning or be according to an act.  

2. Legal Certainty- The law should be clear so that every individual may understand it

3. Access to Law- Individuals must access to fair legal process

4. Protection of Human Rights- Law must uphold and ensure protection of human rights

5. Equality Before Law- Law should be applied to everyone equally.

​We exercise the Rule of Law in our daily lives. By following laws, such as obeying traffic laws, we are upholding the Rule of Law. It is not just a legal concept, but a set of practices and expectations we complete to our day to day.
