How Many More? The Pattern Behind ICE ‘Self‑Defense’ Killings

            Celebrating New Year’s Eve came to a halt when the sound of gunshots set off. What began as celebratory gunfire ended in the death of a man whose actions may have been misinterpreted through the lens of racial profiling. On December 31, 2025, Keith Porter Jr. was shot outside the Northridge complex and killed by an off‑duty U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent. With no footage of the incident, confusion and manipulation of the story quickly spread. According to a Los Angeles Police Department spokesperson, Porter was firing gunshots into the air—possibly celebratory—when the off‑duty ICE agent allegedly was “forced’’ to use his weapon in response. The agent has been identified as Brian Palacios.

            Keith Porter Jr. was a 43‑year‑old father of two girls, ages 10 and 20, and was known as a devoted “girl dad.” His eldest daughter is currently a standout student at the University of Texas. Porter was a longtime employee at the Northridge Home Depot, beloved by coworkers who described him as a “jack of all trades’’ with a “wonderful soul.’’Porter, nicknamed “Pooter,’’ previously lived in Compton. His cousin Tyler explained that it was a tradition in their neighborhood for grandparents and other residents to fire gunshots into the air to celebrate the New Year. This context directly challenges the off‑duty ICE agent’s justification for shooting Porter, as Porter’s actions were not intended to harm anyone—they were part of a cultural tradition. Tyler stated, “This was another Black father, son, cousin, villager, snatched without any regard to his life. And once again, this is law enforcement not being held accountable for the loss of life.’’

          Palacios, represented by criminal defense lawyer Stacie Helpern, argues that the shooting was lawful and in self‑defense. Palacios lives in the apartment complex where Porter was killed and owns authorized firearms as an ICE agent. According to the Department of Homeland Security, Palacios heard the gunshots growing louder, as if approaching his apartment. He allegedly went outside with his firearm, identified himself as law enforcement, and after Porter allegedly refused to comply, Palacios fired at him. Palacios has not been charged in Porter’s death, as federal authorities claim it was self‑defense.

           However, the Department of Homeland Security’s record of false or misleading claims has raised concerns that the government is not being truthful about Porter’s death. Although several local politicians and activists rallied around the case, Porter’s killing gained even more attention alongside the widely known and recorded deaths in Minneapolis. Victims of ICE brutality in Minneapolis, such as Renee Nicole Good and Alex Pretti, have fueled growing fear and anger toward ICE agents. More deaths continue to be reported as “self‑defense,” even when video evidence and witnesses say otherwise. These incidents have sparked nationwide protests—many of which are censored on social media or receive little to no media coverage.

          Porter’s family is now seeking justice and preparing a lawsuit against the federal government. For many, his death stands as yet another example of the dehumanizing reality we are living in. And this is where the responsibility shifts to all of us. Cases like Porter’s cannot fade into silence. They demand public pressure, community organizing, and relentless questioning of the systems that allow these deaths to be dismissed without accountability. Justice for Keith Porter Jr. is not only about one man—it is about refusing to accept a world where preventable deaths are normalized and hidden. We must continue to speak, protest, document, and demand transparency until real change is no longer optional but unavoidable.
